The Color Scale of Feelings

Sometimes it's hard for me to talk. When I'm feeling upset, my brain goes into something called fight, flight, or freeze mode. When this happens, I lose the ability to speak. This happens when I'm not happy or feeling afraid. My goal is to keep safe so I don't hurt myself or others.

This is a color scale of feelings that you can use to show your mood when you can't speak.

Dark Red: Angry
Red: Stressed
Orange: Embarrassed or Frustrated
Yellow: Warning (I'm Getting Upset)
Green: Happy or Excited to have fun!
Blue: Relaxed
Purple: Calm or Tired

What colors would you add? Do you have trouble talking when you are upset?

Speech Trouble by Joshua

Kids with autism are like a rainbow. There are so many different color shades and tints. Some kids can talk, some can't. I can talk well now since I've been practicing and have been going to speech therapy for a long, long time. When children like me can't talk, they get very frustrated because they can't say what they want. My family made me a communication board that helped me show what I wanted. I can point to each thing like food, toys, help, and basic needs. When I was able to use this board, the therapists made me try the DynaVox MT4. It was neat because when I pushed a button, it talked for me to my parents. There are new types of boxes available and there are new tablets like iPads so you can download the apps for a price.

What is your favorite app on a tablet or another device to use for communication? I would love to hear from you on the poll on the side of this blog.

Welcome to AutistiKids!

We are two brothers who have autism. I'm fourteen years old and my brother is seventeen.

GOALS of this blog:

  • To support other kids with autism and let them know they are not alone.
  • To share funny, sad, and happy stories of life with autism.
  • To reach at least 2,500 views for now, but hopefully many more in the future.
  • To see what other kids with autism are interested in.
We like to look at road maps, atlases, Minecraft, and Pokémon!
